WordPress WordAds Challenges Google’s AdSense

WordPress has been around for a long time, and established its self as one of the best content management systems available to users. This blog is built from the WordPress platform. The product works well and has a community of dedicated users that are helpful for nearly any problems one might run into. There are 67 million WordPress powered blogs on the internet. This alone attests to the quality of the product.
WordAds has just been announced for the WordPress platform, something the community has been demanding for some time. It is supposed to be an alternative to Google AdSense and other methods of monetizing blogs. WordPress has made its opinion of Google’s AdSense very clear and it is not favorable.
There isn’t much information available regarding the service other than that a custom domain name is required. However, I would assume it will be similar to Google AdSense banner and text adds. WordPress thinks their users deserve better options than what are currently available to them and have decided to create their own service.
…they need to offer something extraordinaire.
This is exciting news as they might bring something fresh to the table. WordPress is known for developing great products and lets hope this holds true with WordAds. I have never been a fan of AdSense and would love to have an alternative. Here is the official statement.
Over the years one of the most frequent requests on WordPress.com has been to allow bloggers to earn money from their blog through ads. We’ve resisted advertising so far because most of it we had seen wasn’t terribly tasteful, and it seemed like Google’s AdSense was the state-of-the-art, which was sad. You pour a lot of time and effort into your blog and you deserve better.
Well we think we’ve cracked it, and we’re calling it WordAds.
Blogs are unique and they shouldn’t be treated like every other page on the internet. There are more than 50,000 WordPress-powered blogs coming online every day, and every time I explore them randomly I’m always surprised and delighted by how people are using the platform to express themselves.
As a WordPress user you’re breathing rarefied air on the internet: the Creators, the Independents. Creative minds aren’t satisfied being digital sharecroppers on someone else’s domain, and you want to carve out your own piece of the internet and have a space that you’re proud of because it’s so… you.    @WordPress.com
It sounds like WordPress does not think AdSense is a quality option for their users. I don’t love the service but it has served as a valid way to monetize millions of WordPress blogs. Many people have found success using Adsense, CPA advertising or selling add space. Most people avoid change and enjoy using services they are familiar with. If WordAds wants to convert the millions of WordPress users to their service they need to offer something extraordinaire.
WordPress has the ability, I just hope the end product is something useful. It will be clear in the coming months if the service is a viable way to monetize a blog. More options are always welcomed.
