What is a Ping? A ping is a simple outbound ICMP packet containing URL and website info(title/desc/etc) that is sent out to a server requesting a response. SEOs target specific search engine, blog networks, social media and other servers so they respond and come investigate the URL includes in the ICMP ping request.
When you hear about “ping services” and “pinging backlinks” it is all about the “ping”.
But why are webmasters shooting out pings everyday and what functional use do they have for your website?
The primary reason that webmasters utilize ping services or plugins is to help get their content and URLs browsed by search engine spiders. Once you have established a new page or post with great content, keywords, and media, you’ll want the search engines to be aware of it. Sending out a ping request to search engines to come spider and read your new post/page is the easiest way to get pages indexed quickly into Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Plus there are some other worthwhile networks which you can send pings too.
Why Ping?
- Get backlinks indexed and found sooner so your website gets credit and link juice
- To get search engines, blog networks, RSS feed sites, etc to spider and index your website
- Get your new pages and posts indexed into Google, Yahoo, and Bing faster
- Indexed pages show up in search results, so the faster they get indexed, the sooner you can get traffic
Only send pings when new content is added to your site and spiders can find something new/worthwhile, spamming ping services can get you penalized or banned.
There are a few different ways to ping the search engine servers. You can utilize a free ping service, there are a lot of quality ones out there and remember that most of them use the same server lists. Also some ping services even have automated registration and “ping profiles” that you can build for custom ping schedules. Otherwise you can just input the data quickly and manually ping the links you need when you want. I don’t mind taking this effort since it will only take you a minute or two tops, but you’ll be sure to have no spamming or automation issues..
- Pingler.com – great ping system for single URLs and main domains, setup an account and customize an automated schedule if you’d like
- Pingfarm.com – excellent MASS PING website, great for backlinks and link lists that you want spidered for indexing
- Feedshark.Brainbliss.com – use this to ping Podcast and other blog networks as well, great ping tool
WordPress users are the real lucky ones, they get to utilize plugins to optimize their WP blog for ping service use. These plugins will regularly ping your newly created content, whether its a post or page to all services included. One of the only problems is you have to get an optimized ping services list, which I will post at the bottom of this page. If your a blogger you’ll never need to do this manually, except for backlinks and offsite work. Just setup one of the ping plugins and make sure you set it to ping only on new content creation, no need to spam already indexed and spidered pages non stop. You can be penalized and even banned for spamming ping services, you’d have to do it a lot, but why risk it.
