Due to the current linking system used by Twitter, it is not an extremely important link building social media site for SEO. Twitter does provide a huge mass of possible clients and readers that you can market too though.  You can easily take the time to search for relevant friends and peers from which to create a foundation for future twitter marketing.  Build your profiles with accurate information and go in-depth, don’t skim through it and barely fill out fields.  Then start following relevant tweet’ers, this will help you start building a network and getting people to follow you back.  Make sure your first 10 posts are primarily content based with relevance to a discussion or something worthwhile, don’t spam your links out yet.  Over the period of the next 100 tweets, you’ll incorporate some for linking purposes and also to get followers to come to your landing page.

We know that Google does not track “tweets” as backlinks, this is primarily due to their non-static, ever-evolving nature.  There really isn’t a static URL or webpage that can be counted as the backlink.  But, Google has began to incorporate more and more social media “signals” into their algorithm over the past two years.  These do give you some “weight” in the SERPs, but currently it is pretty minor.  However, incorporating social media updates and submissions is key to letting Google, Yahoo, and Bing know that your constantly interacting with peers and offering more content.  This will help you stay current or progressive in your search engine rankings, you do not want a search engine algorithm thinking your site has gone “stale”.

BUT

Twitter can be very useful for generating traffic and building relationships with visitors and other users.  This can be very important once your site is established.  It will help you keep receiving the same visitors and build a base of steady followers.

• Build backlinks in profile
• Add as many friends as possible but do not spam
• Write product reviews/affiliate marketing/sales updates for return customers
• Add widgets to your site to capitalize on more content
